While watching the local news this weekend, I noticed a commercial that was quite disturbing. This was particularly bothersome because normally I don't watch commercials, and it would have been nice to miss this one. But I digress.

This advertisement was advertising a show called "Puppetry of the Penis", which is coming up in May at the Grand Theatre here. As I watched the images flash by (censored, of course!), I asked myself "Who would pay money to see this?" because a rather large audience was shown in the commercial, and they seemed to be enjoying themselves.

Puzzled, I looked this show up on the Internet (here is a tip: never enter the word "penis" in a search engine) and received reviews with quotes like "You forget that you're looking at two men naked on a stage. It's art." I thought I'd let you all in on this, so you can make another addition to your "What is this world coming to?" file.

Fortunately, this was all quickly pushed out of my head when I popped White Blood Cells (the CD, not the actual blood cells) into my CD player. Good music can do that for you. I recommend that you all do the same.

I will abstain from writing much of a main page update today because I am an ogre.

Also, after realizing that the games had already begun, I just spent all of twenty minutes making these NBA playoff predictions, and boy does it show.

I walked into the music store today intending to just look around, and ended up plunking down forty-five dollars (Canadian, of course!) for Since I Left You by The Avalanches and The Beta Band's The Three EP's. Honestly, someone needs to stop me from going into these places. I will turn my whole bank account into CD's before I know it.

Also on the subject of music, I have committed what may well be the Cardinal Sin of professional music critics. Luckily, I am not a professional, so I am allowed to do it. While looking at our current reviews of great albums such as Is This It, Source Tags and Codes, and planning upcoming ones like White Blood Cells (White Stripes), I concluded that the rating of 9.3 that I issued in my inaugural Apropos of Nothing review to Radiohead's Kid A was too high! I have modified it to my liking, and hopefully this will be a one-time thing.

As far as new reviews go, Dan has come through again, detailing the pros and cons of Designing a Nervous Breakdown by The Anniversary, as well as attempting to answer the tough questions like "What does 'emo' really mean?" Enjoy.

For my birthday, I got these CD's:

Television - Marquee Moon
The Microphones - The Glow, Pt. 2
Jeff Buckley - Grace
The Flaming Lips - The Soft Bulletin

If you have heard of all four of these albums, let alone actually heard them, give yourself a high-five. No, really. You've earned it.

I was kind of in a sluggish mood when it came to reviewing a disc this week, since I was listening to these four religiously, but didn't want to review any of them yet, for obvious reasons. So instead of a review, I will give you something that you will probably enjoy more, and is easier for me because I had already written it. Since I am an outside-the-box kind of thinker, I thought that it could fit in the Ramblings section.

Today's Updates: A Letter to Tim Hortons

I meant to update earlier this week. I really did. The story is that Dan sent me a review of Swiss Army Romance by Dashboard Confessional on Tuesday. It was a good review -- you would have liked it. That is not the point. The point is that this review was supporting Dashboard Confessional and gave the album relatively high praise. This was not acceptable. Furthermore, in the review, Dan took blatant and uncalled-for potshots at me for absolutely hating Dashboard Confessional. This could only mean one thing, and that was that Dan is no longer with us. No, no! It means that later this month, the first LUKE vs. DAN review will go up, in which we will debate our opinions on Swiss Army Romance, and each give a score. It will be fun, and I will win.

But all of this, of course, meant that Dan's review did not go up this week. I wanted, however, to update once before my birthday. So, since it is now five minutes before that time, I figured this was as good a time as any. March's updates have been moved to the archives, and my latest review is up.
