What a wild and crazy guy
Normally, I would devote this area to making fun of Mike Tyson, but not this time. In his latest profanity-laced, mildly coherent rant, he proclaimed that in his upcoming bout with Lennox Lewis, his "main objective in the fight is to be professional but to kill him." So I am going to abstain from making any jokes at his expense, just to err on the side of caution.

So, looking at Kylie Minogue's two hit singles since her comeback last year, I found something that they both had in common. The chorus of "Can't Get You Out of my Head": "I can't get you out of my head / Boy, your loving is all I think about." And that of "In Your Eyes": "It's no surprise / I've been watching you lately / I want to make it with you." Now her return to the spotlight makes sense.

I still have to shake my head when I see how far the Grammies have fallen. This past year actually wasn't as bad as most of the Grammies in recent history have been. Take, for example, the 2000 edition. Top acts such as Eminem, Kid Rock, Will Smith, Ricky Martin, and Britney Spears were among the most-nominated artists. If this were the Oscars, it would be the equivalent of "American Pie 2", "Tomcats", and "Dude, Where's My Car?" competing for Best Picture. Doesn't the Grammy committee realize that MTV already gives out awards that honour the music that very few people over the age of twenty listen to?

Oh boy, speaking of which, the MTV Movie Awards came out this week, which could mean a field day for me. I could point out the "ARE YOU SERIOUS?" nominations in each category, but that could get monotonous, so let me just share a few that especially made me giggle:

In the Best Actor category, Josh Hartnett was nominated for Pearl Harbor, and someone named "Vin Diesel" was nominated for The Fast and The Furious. Yes, "Vin Diesel".

Best acting performance of 2001?
For Best Actress, we have another Pearl Harbor star, Kate Beckinsale, who will be competing against actresses such as Angelina Jolie.....for Tomb Raider.

The Breakthrough Female category doubles as the Teen Music Star Who Decided to Give Acting a Shot Because, Hey, They Can Do Whatever They Want category, as Mandy Moore and Britney Spears square off.

I can't get enough of MTV's "Becoming". This show is just laugh-out-loud funny. Are all of MTV's shows this unintentionally hysterical?

As much as I like to take shots at MuchMusic, I must admit that they have been right on in their Top Tens show the last couple of weeks. First, they named Radiohead's "Street Spirit" as the best black-and-white video ever, then dubbed "Frontier Psychiatrist" by The Avalanches as the weirdest music video of all-time. Good choices.

One of the best developments in baseball this year has been the debuts of Astros reliever Brandon Puffer and Atlanta pitcher Jung Bong. This has to add even less credibility to the MLB's stand against drug use. I am still waiting for one of the two to start using Weezer's "Hash Pipe" as their entrance music.

Joe Morgan is just plain boring as a colour commentator, a trait which is even more evident when he writes columns. Does ESPN not realize this?

The Raptors loss to the Pistons in their first-round series was not just disappointing as a Toronto fan. It also deprived me of the opportunity to use my "Ben (Wallace) and Jerry (Stackhouse) melted in the playoff heat" joke. Maybe next round.

It saddens me that the nickname "Scoreless" Corliss Williamson is no longer appropriate.

For all the talk of exciting, down-to-the-wire NBA playoff series, I am a bit surprised to see that all eight first round winners were higher seeds.

For some reason, the fact that there is a WNBA draft caught me totally off guard. I mean, it seems logical that there'd be one, but it was just something I never expected to see.

There was nothing as hilariously awkward this week as the trash-talking between the Toronto and Ottawa mayors before the Leafs/Senators series. Nothing.

You cannot watch the movie Rounders and not get the urge to play poker. It just doesn't happen.

DeNiro as Jake La Motta in Raging Bull
I finally saw the movie that has been called the best of the 80's this week -- Raging Bull. Watching it reminded me a lot of watching Goodfellas. You have the same director (Martin Scorcese), the same leading actors (Robert DeNiro and Joe Pesci) who are playing the same kind of roles (angry boxers, angry mobsters, what's the difference?). Both were critically acclaimed and are considered to be two of the best films of all time, but neither won the Oscar for Best Picture in their respective release years (1980 for Raging Bull, 1990 for Goodfellas). I watched both movies during sick days, and found both to be hugely overrated. The similarities here are getting a bit eerie.

Is there a more underappreciated film than Zero Effect? It is not a masterpiece, but I rather enjoyed it, and you never, ever hear it mentioned.

While watching the Cheers reunion on Frasier last Tuesday, it became very clear that they should have stayed....unreunited, for lack of a better word.

Why do I get the feeling that CBS is planning to do sixteen Survivor series and then have all the winners compete in the seventeenth one? Hopefully this is just paranoia, as I can't see viewer interest staying too high once "Survivor XV: The Bronx" rolls around.

I think Phil Stubbs of "Ed" is my favourite television character since George Costanza.

If I were making a list of the top five opening tracks of the last few years, they would be, in no particular order:
  • Jets to Brazil - "Crown of the Valley" (Orange Rhyming Dictionary)
  • White Stripes - "Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground (White Blood Cells)
  • And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead - "It Was There That I Saw You" (Source Tags and Codes)
  • The Beta Band - "Dry the Rain" (The Three EP's)
  • The Tea Party - "Fire in the Head" (The Edges of Twilight)

  • Apparently, yesterday was the official No Pants Day. I am sure that I am not the only one feeling ripped off.

I am thinking that my life would be much more gripping if the "Rocky" theme was playing in the background wherever I went.
